It’s goal was to expand and enrich the creativity of the brush painter’s art, being influence by western arts, Lingnan School of Painting, with the spirit of reform, innovation, and accommodation, prospered as another important school painting after Shanghai School of Painting in China during late Qing Dynasty and early modern China.
Unlike other Chinese painters, leaders of Lingnan School of Painting like Gao Jianfu, Gao Qifeng, Chen Shuren all organized and participated in the Revolution of 1911 to wake the public. Their artistic pursuit features an emphasis on drawing from life.
Lingnan School of Painting synthesizes the brush work of Chinese painting and the Western painting’s perception of space and effect of light and color, and adopts the boneless painting technique and the technique of adding water or powder to still-drying pigment, reflecting the spirit of the time and distinctive characteristics of the local area.
